It is hard to believe but 30 years have passed since the idea of “Green Lungs of Poland” was born. It was mainly about stopping the degradation of natural environment and the protection of natural treasures in North-eastern Poland.
It was decided that an area of over 50 000km2 shall be protected with all its unique landscape values of European scale. This caused the resignation of localising new industrial and agricultural objects especially damaging to the environment. Instead the direction of ecological agriculture was taken and the opportunities for tourism and recreation based on adapted to natural resources base were created. Then healing properties of nature and clean air were appreciated. The treatment of upper respiratory tracts and the healing of most neuroses should be carried out in “Green Lungs of Poland”. The uniqueness of the region is based on the quantity and quality of preserved natural resources, second to none in Poland and even in Europe. The result of “Green Lungs of Poland” idea was the highest form of protection for the most valuable area and the creation of next National Parks such as Wigierski National Park, Biebrzański National Park and Narwiański National Park.
Today after 30 years the term “Green lungs of Poland” not only in country but also abroad is associated with Podlachia and has plenty to offer to tourists visiting this unique in many ways region of Poland.
